They are selected by height, weight, similar looks, eye color...etc. They have very strict rules/guideline during and after their service at the tomb. Take time to read about them on the net. Red73 thank you for the wonderful shots.. Stephen Shell

The Tomb has NEVER been left alone since the minute they started to guard it. I had a friend that was a guard. Great shots, but i have to wonder, if the weapon fails inspection.........what happens? There is a "Old Guard" recruiter there. They are strict in many of their guidelines. The reason for them being a certain height (6' or taller) is that many nations are smaller in stature than the US. The tall height of the "Old Guard" soldiers is to portray "dominance" (for a lack of a better term). I've been honored to know a couple of guys who have served as Tomb Guards. One was recruited from my basic training class. If you've never seen the changing of the guard is truly a sight to behold. Kevin

Under the circumstances, I think you did well to balance the exposure, short of an HDR approach. They are well done and evoke emotion. Stan (See my gallery at http://www.pbase.com/sparker1
