I am hoping to upgrade to a canon 40D. B&H offers the body for $620 after mail-in-rebate. Is this the lowest price I can get for a new 40D body?

Regarding lenses, I enjoy photographing buildings (built environment), landscapes, portraits and details. I am considering buying a 50 mm 1/4 and a 10 - 22 mm to meet my requirements. However, I am not sure if either would suffice as a "walk around."

Any suggestions for an emerging photo enthusiast with a tight budget?

That price is when you buy the printer too isn't it?

For "walking around" I find that the kit lens (17-85) that came with my 40D works great as long as it's day time. The zoom is very useful.

You can buy the 50mm 1.8 for less than $100 too.

Oh! overlooked that line, i got too excited about the rebate. Has anyone tried pricingdepot.com,1ayphoto.com or lowpricedigital.com, their price seems too low for a new 40D body (at $499)?

Should I look into the 50mm 1.8 before investing on a 1.4 or should I just go all the way from start?

check www.resellerratings.com (external link) for any company before you buy from them. The lowest reputable reseller for the 40D is us1camera.

thanks syntrix, profeel seems to have a good offer on the body with an 17-85mm. Is it really worth me buying the kit if I'm also buying a 50mm and 10-22 mm?

Well, do you need the 24-85mm range?

oops, never mind that was a 28-135 mm. Is it worth 300 extra for the 17-85mm?

egordon, i was considering something around that range as supplement or walk around. I am buying a 50mm and 10-22mm for sure.

Well, since you'll be covered with the 10-22mm, you'll probably be fine with the 28-135mm. I have the 17-85 and it's an ok lens, my other lenses usually beat the snot out of it, but it has a nice range, decent enough image quality, good IS, and really fast autofocus.

I'd save your $300 and put it towards a nice fast prime such as the 85mm f/1.8 :)

so 28-105mm over the 24-85mm?

guess, it gives more versatility

Who said anything about a 28-105mm or a 24-85mm lens? You do know WHAT those numbers mean, right? If you do, the choice should be clear, or at least the trade-offs between a 17-85mm and a 28-135mm lens.
