Looking into buying this lens. I was scouring fatwallet looking for good deals on canon lenses and I found a good deal at cameta.com for the
Sigma 18-200 f/3.5 - 6.3 DC OS for $399.95
This seems like a pretty good deal.

It is "OK". It is not "good". It is a long way from "excellent".

i hear it suffers from time to time.. but there was a thread on here about a year ago. and the guy had posted his images, and his thoughts on the lens.. he felt it was a good buy.. but i cant remember what he felt the drawbacks were.

Just been looking at some members postings from Canon's new 18-200 efs and that could be worth considering as a possible choice if in price range.

There are going to be, obviously, compromises optically with any 11x or 15x zoom. That said, the Sigma 18-200 OS is a very good all-in-one lens. The convenience is tremendous and the OS works excellent. From the early reviews and crops I've seen of the new 18-200 IS, it seems to suffer from some poor border performance and stopping down helps little. Given that, and its price, the Sigma is the way to go currently. The new Tamron 18-270 VC will be out soon and that has a lot of people interested. Check out the lens archive thread for pics.
