Saw this guy will rafting on the Grand Rhonde River near Baker, Oregon.

I tried to get the wife to move the green plant in the foreground but she wasn't too hot on the idea.

I think the snake had just eaten a critter, notice bulge in its belly. We checked on it the next day and it hadn't moved 2 feet.

Crotalus Viridens, aka Timber Rattler or Green Rattler. I've seen them often while fishing on the Deschutes. Even had one come into camp one time and had to carry it out on a stick. Great pic and your wife was wise to be "disinclined to acquiesce to your request.."

the timber rattlesnake is crotalus horridus and occurs in the eastern us.

there is no species called "Viridens" you are probably thinking of viridis.

the species you are looking at there is Crotalus oreganus. i'd have to key it out to see which subspecies it is.

great pic.

Maybe 6 feet.

For the most part rattle snakes are very docile and and are far more afraid of you then you are of them.
This snake had just eaten, and like me it was fat, lazy and soaking up the sun.
Not at all agreesive.

Nice shot. For all the time I've spent out in the brush/wild in Texas I have never actually seen a live rattle snake.

Beautiful! In nearly 30 yr of wetlands/environmental consulting in Florida, I have seen 2 live rattlers in the wild - and no camera either time! Both were diamondbacks in the 4-6 ft range.

I have come across more rattlers this last summer than ever. Here's a pic of one that was near my tent and my friend picked it up and tossed him in the river. (Not a great pic but all I had was a p/s pentax optio.
My friend is pretty smart about snakes and he said you can tell when they are docile or aggressive.
You'll note this snake is more interested in trying to keep his balance on the stick than biting my friend.

I float rivers a lot. The snake was found while floating the Grande Rhonde River from Minam to Troy, Oregon, about a 50 mile float takes a couple of days.
Minam is maybe an hour north of Baker City on the Wallowa River.
Found it while setting up the crapper.

The second snake was found on Hell's canyon on the snake river here in Idaho.
