Are Canon batteries really worth the money? Is there a noticeable difference in batterlife between the Canons and some of the off brands? If not, what are some of the brand batterys that perform well?

All I can say from experience is avoid branded batteries unless you have bottomless pockets.

Over here in the UK a genuine BP511 battery for a XXD range will set you back approx £40+ - this is a 1390MaH battery, a generic compatible from China/Japan (mine have no make listed) costs around £8.00 and are up to 2000MaH (I've seen various between 1500-2000, mine are 2000)

I've never bought a branded battery, except the ones that came with my 350D and 40D and have never had any problems with the after market ones. Got 3 after market ones for my 40D and tbh I don't think I've yet run down a set of 2 of them in the grip in a single session.

SterlingTek batteries (external link) are often recommended.

I purchased 6 XT/XTi SterlingTek.com batteries about 4 years ago. One died within a year and a second one just died. Still a good deal for the money. Battery averages about 850 exposures per charge. Will purchase again when I get my 5DII.

i bought two sterlingtek batteries for my XTI almost two years ago. I use both of them all the time and I have never had any problems. Sterlingtek is popular around here for good reason.

using a 3rd party battery voids the warrenty on the camera if anything happens battery related. On the same note I wonder what they cover if there is a canon battery related problem with the camera? Dont really know, but I did buy an extra canon battery for that fact.

Where did you learn that a 3rd party battery voids the camera's warranty?

And more importantly, how would Canon know?

I would think, with the regulations placed upon vehicle warranties preventing the blame of 3rd party accessories voiding the warranty, that those regulations may be passed to other products. I would just put my Canon battery back in if I needed to send it in. I HIGHLY doubt there is anyway for them to tell a 3rd party battery was put in.

I went ahead and ordered 2 SterlingTek's for my new grip.

Personally I only stick with Canon brand batteries... I bought my two extra BP-511A batteries from Amazon for $34.95 free shipping no tax. Their price varies on them almost daily so I just added them to my cart and waited and when the price changes you get a notification in your cart telling you so. Once it decreased I picked up two.

What is the deal with Sterlingtek prices? I was looking for a replacement for the Rebel XT NB-2L and they have 1700mAh batteries for $10.99 (external link) AND $16.48 (external link). Even a 1500mAh battery for $14.99 (external link). What is the deal?

Can anyone else see any differences?
