I think it was Chuck Westfall of the Technical Advisor/Professional Products Mktg. Division that mentioned a number of years ago that either 3rd party batteries void the camera warranty or the battery doesn't have the 'extra' circuit protection that Canon batteries supposedly have.

I don't think using 3rd party batteries void the manufactures warranty. There is a law in place that protects us consumers for that...such as using 3rd party inks in Epson printers. You can use 3rd inks and not void the warranty...of course Epson will tell you otherwise.

Also when you return a camera for repair they always suggest not to send the battery.
