Remember when they had the $50 upgrade rebate? If you upgraded from the Xti to the 40D they had a $50 mail in rebate, which went on the same time as the automatic rebates on the 40D.

Well, I did upgrade from the XTi to the 40D so I qualified for this promotion.

As soon as I downloaded the rebate form I registered both of my cameras as the rebate stated I had to do. I got the emails from Canon stating they were registered.

I admit, I waited a little long before I mailed in the rebate form and serial number off of the box of the 40D... but in plenty enough time for the promotion. I had simply forgotten about it.

I used a larger envelope and I printed my label online as I do with any other rebate I have ever done (which does cost more, I just like to make sure the package is recieved). Sadly it was returned to me (about 4 weeks later) saying I couldn't use the DC because the envelope wasn't thick enough to go through the USPS machines and that Canon refused to pay the extra postage (which I totally agree with, they shouldn't have to). I always submit my rebates this same way and never ever had a problem so I was unaware I was doing something wrong. Well, by the time I got the package back it was one day past the promotion. I didn't open the envelope, I put it in another and used regular old stamps this time with no DC. I took it to the post off and sent it back off in hopes they would see that the package was already mailed once.

Well the other day I got the little card that said they can not honor the rebate for 2 reasons.

The first was because they say the XTi was never registered. This is total crap. It was. I know it was.

The second was because they did not recieve it during the promotion.

So I emailed and explained all of the above and they said no problem, however, there is no record of that serial number in their database so they would not honor the rebate. Then they said that if I still had the email I could send it to them. I thought, great, no problem. I'm terrible at emptying my emails so I should have it. Then I searched my emails and it went back only to the end of June. I completely forgot that after getting my new 40D I also got a new computer!!! SO all of my old emails are gone. I have my original sales reciepts for both cameras as I am the original owner of both. They said no, that's not good enough. I asked if I had 2 cameras registered with them, perhaps I made a typo. The only thing they said was the numbers needed to match on the paper and the registery so if I made a typo it would not be honored. They know the serial numbers of their cameras so if I accidently made a typo, why would they allow it to go through?

So anyhow, if you got through this, thanks. I'm just really PO'd that they will not work with me on this. I know I registered the camera and I was pretty certain I double checked to make sure there was no typos.

Not Canon you should be peeved at (or at least not completely).

They farm rebates out to clearinghouses who will use any (and every) excuse they can to deny a rebate.

I always make a complete copy (scanner) of everything I send in (even the envelope so I know the address it was sent to) so if anything like this happens I have full documentation of what I sent.

Thanks for the reply.

I did make a copy of the form I sent in, in which the serial number does match the one on my XTi, leading me to think I had a typo when I registered the camera (which I was pretty positive I double checked).

I just don't understand how they don't have me as registering the camera. I mean, without that email I have no proof....and normally I would save an email like that.

Oh hey, I have a question, I wonder...if anyone that reads this knows...
I still have my old computer. My hard drive I put into this computer as an extra and I didn't clear anything off of it. If I put that hard drive back into my other computer that has not been touched since getting this one, can I retrieve my emails?

If the hard drive is in this computer (rather than the old one), you should be able to retrieve the email without switching the drive out. What operating system and what email program?

In this computer I am using vista and outlook and/or incredimail.

In the other computer I used xp - outlook and incredimail.

I have tried to open from that hard drive but it doesn't work....any suggestions?

If the email came in to your Outlook account you might be able to import it into your current version.

Buried somewhere in Documents and Settings\"login name" is one or more files with a .PST extension. Find it (them) and then do a "File -> Open" in your current Outlook.

I have no clue what incredimail is, so I can't offer any ideas there.

Good luck.

might be easier to put it back in the old PC, if you're better with plugs and cables than you are with software.

it'll work fine, if you haven't blown anything away.
