Yes breakin is a fairly big task, I think it charges and discharges 3 times, and does it slowly.

Analyse and refresh charges, discharges, then charges again. It uses 1000ma charge, 500ma discharge, then 1000ma charge by default, plus rest periods. Overall they typically take overnight, give or take a few hours.

Robert, why not just get two C-9000 units? That should take tare of your eight at a time dilemma.

Yeah, but the ability to do 12 at a time is even better, IMO. And you should never need to analyze 8 batteries at the same time, urgently! If that happens before a job, you'd be better-off buying alkalines just to make sure you're good to go, then sorting the batteries out later...

That's why I got a C-9000 and a C-801. I figure if I need to refresh batteries i'll have time to do it, but it's important that I can rapidly charge a bunch of cells if I need to. I have one week in summer that I have three weddings, Tuesday Friday and Saturday, overnight I want to charge two battery packs and two sets of cells for the flash, so 24 cells. I'll probably have to break out the old chargers that night. I have backup cells but I would rather use my highest capacity main cells whenever possible.

Oh and I have more cells on the way, Powerex, which will bring my total to a number not worth counting. Shouldn't we have better power sources available?!

We should! But for now, like you, I carry a lot of AA rechargeables and hot shoe flashes with me. If only I knew how much that Elinchrom Ranger Quanta will end up costing in our dollars when it comes out.... maybe I could start saving. If our dollar keeps going the way it is, I might as well forget it! :(

If I still have a lot of time, probably I'll try those Maha charger and try to re-condition your messed-up NIMH batteries.
But since now Im usually busy with work, wife and kid, I'll just retire them for other non-critical use (TV remote, etc), toss em, or give them to other people who has better use of them and just buy Sanyo Eneloop batteries.
Good thing about Eneloop is that they are new type of NIHM (low-discharge) so let say you are a wedding photographer and have wedding every week/two weeks, you can charge them on Monday because by weekend or next weekend they will be always ready to use (low-discharge NIMH can hold the juice for a year with little loss).
Hope that helps.
