It will do firewire 400 and 800 along with usb 2.0. Do you already have an external drive for backup? If not, you really need 2 external drives, one for backup, one for extra storage. If you've got that much storage used up for photos, you really need to have some type of backup strategy in place.

Drives and media cost almost nothing, the media theoretically lasts longer than most people live, and there's almost no chance for mechanical failure with properly stored DVD disks.
