I use a 680B and a Manfrotto 234 tilt head with my 1D III+100-300 f/4 (2550gm total ish) and I find it to be an excellent combination.

Ended up looking through Giottos, Manfrottos and Gitzos monopods. Gitzos were too expensive for me. Giottos had a few nice 4-5 section compact monopods, but I didn't like the twist lock system. I ended up liking the 680b the best and I brought my amvona ath-a04 tripod head with me and started screwing it on all the monopods. I'll probably purchase another head in the future, but I didn't want to spend another $60-$70 on a tripod head. The amvona head is a tad heavy (2lbs =/ where as my monopod is 1.8lbs) but it's plenty sturdy and it can support my gear without a problem. Thanks for your help guys, loving my new shiny 680b.

For what it's worth, I use a 680B with a Manfrotto 168 ball head for my 40D with grip and 70-200 f2.8 and have absolutely no problems whatsoever (in fact, at a few recent sporting events other togs commented on the build of it compared to their smaller, lighter ones - sadly, I've always reckoned I'd rather go for one that's a bit of overkill than one that's just not enough)

2x 7d, EOS 3 film body, G15, X-Pro1 with 18mm f2, 35mm f1.4 & 60mm f2.4 macro, Kiev rangefinder with 50mm lens. 70-200 f4L, 17-40 f4 L, 50mm f2.5 macro, nifty fifty, 20-40 EX HSM, Samyang 85mm f1.4, Rokinon 8mm f3.5, 2x Fuji X-Pro1, Fuji XF 18mm f2, 35mm f1.4, 60mm f2.4 macro, 3x Yongnuo 560 II, 540EZ, Phottix Strato 2 wireless triggers, extension tubes, Manfrotto 055 tripod, manfrotto monopod.

i used the 676b with my 1d mark III and 100-400L and it was perfect. i wanted something more compact but also very light and now use the benro mc-66 n6 which is about the same weight, but is more compact and stiffer.

my thought on monopods is unless you are using a big gun get a light, stiff, compact monopod or it won't be with you when you need it :D.

+1 with Ed, you can't get any lighter than the 676b from Bogen.

I use with the 1D + 70-200 and 300 f2.8 with no problem. Very light.

This is the monopod that I have and it is a light but stable monopod.
