I think it is obviously meant to be somewhat fantastical so the break from realism doesn't bother me. Personally, I find that the subject kind of blends in with the background a little too much. I think the background is very interesting with all the textures, but it's busy, and my attention was pulled away from the homeless man and his dog.

I won't get into the HDR debate except to say it is unnecessary in this case, insufficient DR. The things you do for yourself die with you, the things you do for others live forever.
