You can do better with photoshop i am sure, play with shadow/highlight, level, and layers masking and you will get something decent.

It looks almost like a pencil sketch, and the textual interest is superb. I don't feel any need for more emphasis on the subject... his environment is a large part of the interest in the image, and balancing the emphasis works well. The problem is I also agree with some of the other posts that it seems to have lost something the first image had...
