This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 48hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before and After #118".

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!
Any edit, over-the-top creative or subtle, is encouraged!

This game will end on Monday, October 13th at 11:00 pm (EST)

My great great Grandfather.

Since I have never attempted to restore a photo, I figured I would give it a try here.

Used my HDR to bring out the detail from the shadows and clear the image up some.
Applied NR
Cleaned image up w\clone and healing brush
During the process I lost a some detail in the eyes, so I copied the face from
the original image and pasted in.
Dodge and burn in various places
Cloned out shadow

I started with fixing cracks
then used clone tool to fill border and cover flowers
changed to sepia
I added slight canvas texture because originally I was going to find an "old frame" for it..I couldn't find a frame I was happy with though so I decided burn the edges instead.
I added film grain texture
dodged around hands because texture made hands very dark.
then put picture on slightly larger white layer
followed a tutorial to get burnt edges by:
changed they layer properties on the picture layer adding drop shadow and inner glow
then used eraser on edges.

Rather than 'fix' the oldness, I decided to go with it. ;)

Copied photo on top of a new layer.

Filled new layer with a dark gray color taken from picture.

Erased the parts of the layer that I wanted the picture to show through (just the darker color in the circle)

Used the clone tool to blend the edges together.

Worked with various brushes and textures to match the background to the center of the original picture. Played with brushes more to make sure that all textures blended well. I used lots of brushes at different opacities and sizes. Mostly old paper brushes.

Cropped.

Added a frame.

Overlayed another texture on top of it all with just a hint of sepia color.

I decided to have some fun with this one Monty...
(Decidedly very low tech!)
Cleaned up the scratches with the clone tool.
Removed oval frame, used clone tool to fill in corners.
Pasted a picture of MY great Grandfather!
Created oval frame around the smaller picture with the brush tool.
Repositioned eyes so that they are both looking at each other.
Cropped
Added frame.

I really appreciate all the edits on this one, each edit has given me ideas on how to handle this boxfull of ancient photos.

Everybody did much better than my feeble attempt (yes Ed even your very fun attempt!!)

french -- nice go at it - I never even thought of trying HDR on these and it has brought out some nice features. Would have loved to see some more of the face (ears) brought back in.

Cat -- Wonderful - I love this and like what you did with the background.

Kim - Nice go at it as well and I like the texture a lot.

Ed -- Thanks for the laugh and I love it! Great idea and I think I will use this as well.

Silver -- Great edit and my Mother says YOU WIN!! Really loved how you extended the edges and the doutone and details are awesome.

Again thanks everybody - I've learned a lot with these edits!!

Wow. ...
I was watching as each of the edits was submitted, and they each are really good in different ways. The blending of textures and brush effects that many of you used was really top notch. If I hadn't decided to go with the "clean/restored" look, I think I would have decided to keep the aged look, and gone down a similar path as Cat.
Nice job all!!

I'll get B&F 118 up as soon as I can choose a pic.;)
