I'm just tossed up between the 10-22 and 11-16 and the only thing that's holding me back on the tokina is the flare problem it has.

Is it really that noticeable? If I shoot a sunset, will I get ghosts and reduced contrast? (with a GND)

Cheers.

Myself, I had not heard that there is a particular problem with flare on that lens. Most all UWA have issues with flare, keep in mind.

I haven't found flare troublesome on the Tokina even taking sunsets, certainly no more than on my Sigma 17-70:)

I shot with the Canon 14mm while at Samy's Pasadena and did notice slight flare, but that's what I wanted to find out how much would be present while deliberately shooting towards the Sun. Long story short I bought the Tokina 11-16 from them and it also exibits slight flare when aiming at or near the Sun. It's going to happen with an UWA lens no matter what wide angle you use. I love the Tokina 11-16 super sharp and flare is not really a big concern for me once you practice using a UWA lens.

I haven't seen ghosting, but flares. Check the archive post for the lens around here.
I've posted several examples.

The tokina flares much more readily than the canon 10-22. The 10-22 is amazing. You don't even have to worry about light source or sun position when shooting with it. It's phenomenal actually.

All lenses have weaknesses. I'm sure if you get the tokina you'll figure out how to get what you want even in unideal conditions.

Well, I wouldn't consider that a recommendation.

I got a very bad flare spot of a rising sun with the S 17-70. Very annoying.

The Canon 10-22 on the other hand is excellent regarding flare resistance. And
you will get the sun in your pictures easily with an UWA.

I think tokina version is not too bad in terms of flare control

My friend has it and it is pretty much ok against australian harsh sunlight

I have used both and the Tokina definitely has more flare then the Canon but no more than any 2.8 wide angle lens.

Yeah, as it has been noted, a 2.8 UWA is a wide lens that is wide open. You will get some flare, but just like the rest of life, you will learn to adjust. I would rather have the tokina at 2.8 than the canon, but I wouldn't just shoot landscapes with it either.
