OK, I think I have a great solution. It's basically what Quad suggested earlier:

I would use hockey tape and lay it on the inside and wrap it over the cap lip so it covers the outside as well. That would keep it from rolling off when you put it back on the lens.

I don't know what "hockey tape" is - we don't have anything by that name in the UK - but I used black electrical tape. (Do you call it by that name in the USA? If not this Wikipedia article (external link) will tell you what I'm talking about.)

It makes the lens cap a nice snug fit, and because it's black and plasticky it's virtually invisible. So it satisfies my requirements of looking professional and being customer-proof.

A little black electrical tape folded over the cap's rim on opposite sides works great; been using mine for over a year like this. Cap is nice and snug and the tape comes off if necessary.

I've used one before and the cap is terrible. It won't even stay on usually inside the bag.

The trick is to go against usual instinct with lens bags and stow it with the lens cap in last; simply tie it up tightly!

Obvious I know, but took me a a scratch on the head or two to figure. It is a truly terrible lens cap though for the basic reasons, completely untransportable without a lens bag, though I guess it gets away wih it on account of size. I was hoping Canon would get around to doing a replacement like the 14mm 2.8 II's new plastic cap.

Black electrical tape is your friend.
Just stick a tiny strip to each hood petal and you'll be fine.

I use a Canon lens pouch, the same one they give with the 1.4x TC (Lens Case LP811). It fits perfect, and I can pretty much put this lens anywhere in my bag and not worry about the cap falling off and/or the front element getting scratched.

My 15mm is in the mail but if it's anything like my old Peleng I placed a strip of gaff tape on the inside of the cover (it's metal as well). Then I also used gaff tape to hold on the cover while in the bag.
