larger size if needed is in my flickr stream

it was my 1st try at food styling, no theme as i cant think what you can cook up from a japanese teapot, thai chili, HK ginger, pinoy garlic :) hence the title culinary mess

Better for what? The red peppers are shown off well in both but there's more focus on them in the second one as you've cut out parts of the teapot and yellow stick-things, whatever they are.

To me the first one's more about the meal/cooking as a whole, the second one's a bit more about the ingredients and red peppers.

Definetly the second.
The perspective in the first one feels all wrong.

I prefer the top picture. The view is from immediately above the ingredients, which suggests more participation in the act of cooking: the second is more from-the-side - could be looking at someone else's activity. The first is also more balanced in it's presentation of ingredients, whereas the central placement of the bowl and chillies dominates the second. The second also suffers in that several elements draw the eye to the edges, compromising the "wholeness" of the image: the bright areas top left and bottom right, the crop through the lid of the tea-pot, the bamboo in the glass disappearing into the top. Even the bright red in the top-right corner draws the eye out of the image. It makes the whole thing more unsatisfying. The top picture shows just enough of each item to satify (except bottom right). - Tony

IMHO, the composition is better in the first and the peppers draw more attention in the first.

I like the 1st one better. Perspective-wise. It's just more interesting and a more balance between red peppers and the rest. In the 2nd picture, the focal point is the red pepper. If you are selling the pepper, of course. Otherwise, the 1st ons is preferred. Just my preference.

Given that the title is called "culinary mess", the 1st photo fit the title better.

I really like #1, the perspective is just right for all the textures in the photo to me .Only thing I would rid myself of is the apple directly behind the kettle.has no place in this "mess" ;)( Culinary Mess is the name folks, not being mean)

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

I liked the first one better as well, but it took me a few moments to figure out why. After looking at them for a bit, to me the "central" subject in this image is the bowl of chili's. The rest of the image seems to support the bowl of chili's for whatever reason in my mind. As such, in the first shot the bowl is positioned in the shot to follow the rule of thirds where as in the second shot, the bowl is fairly close to dead center in the image. Compositionally speaking I think the angle of either shot works but it's that application of the rule of thirds in the first shot that I feel makes the image.

Just my $.02,
Jim

Yes, number one is my fav.

The diagonal lines of the "floor" work well with the tall sides of the photo edge. It also feels a lot more open and spacious.
