Best "walk around" 28-135mm or 17-85?

I've posted quite a bit since I joined because I want to make the most educative purchases. And I'm a beginner, so I need to hear it from the pro's.

I am buying a 40D, however I am trying to decide whether I should go for the 28-135 or the 17-85 (not considering cost, as I found pretty good comparable prices).

I am for buying a 10-20mm for sure since I'll be shooting buildings and landscapes and a 50mm. Which would be a better "walk around" or general use (buildings, building details, portraits, etc.)?

I think the 28-135 would complement the 10-20 and give you a bit more reach. I would have done the same, if I had to do it again. I try not to use my 17-85 at less than 25 or so, because of its heavy distortion at the wide end.

28mm isn't very wide at all on a cropped body, imho... too long for a walkaround. I had the 17-85 and wasn't very pleased with the IQ, however... but given the choice between the two I'd be taking the one with the wider wide end. My copy had godawful distortion at 17mm and anywhere near it, mind, so no good for architectural shots if you like your lines straight...

Why not the Tamron 17-50 2.8?

My "walk around" is a 70-200/2.8L
