There doesn't have to be red on them, just that's a huge giveaway. It has the same shape though. The only spider that makes my skin crawl....

mmm most definitely.

one of our old houses had a family of red backs by the swimming pool... scary :|

There's a bush toilet where I went to change at the hot spring in Shark Bay one night....until I counted 12 redbacks lurking under every possible crevace of the tiny room.
I went back later that night just to see and believe again, and they'd all gone! Then we noticed some going walkabout on the concrete floor.

Alice - So how many lenses did you take with when travelling - 3?
And what bag did you use to hike around with OOC?

gah! that's definitely not good! i used to love NZ for the fact that there are no poisonous spiders/snakes except the white tail spider which doesn't actually do THAT much.

Wohooo! I finally have the last wedding processed to the proof stage :) Upload the gallery and relax from it for a bit...happy happy!

Of course I still have two other huge processing tasks to deal with, but one bite at a time. It's windy today so might as well spend it in the office!

Isn't that spider a black widow - looks like it has an almost-red stripe on the back?? A cross between a redback and an import that came in on ships a while ago?
They're deadly...

Can't be a black widow, they do not have hairy legs...might be a
black spinster spider though!

Bruce on the uncropped MX sky shot, you have some serious crud on your lens/sensor! As Clarence said try slowing the shutter speed to get wheel spin to add movement, If you have an IS lens that will really help to if you have it in the panning mode, for the track shots. Also try to be on the sunny side for better exposure if you can.

I take two, last trip my husband took my old camera and a 3rd lens.

But two are more than enough to carry, specially in countries where I don't feel safe leaving anything valuable in the room. I always take a fast prime, and zoom, either the 16-35 or 24-105 depending on ultra-wide need, and either the 135, 50 (used to be 35L on crop body) or 100 macro, depending on how crowded the place is, macro need and what I need the fast prime for most. My favourite set up at the moment is the 16-35 and 135. The zoom is fast and ultra-wide, and the 135 is just perfect for people. I'd also like the 24-105 and prime set-up, but my husband likes this zoom, so I leave him to it.

I'm off to Bali on Fri for two weeks, and have to take my new 50 to get tax back, so I'll see how this one goes - but would prefer to take the 135.

I've done lots of bushwalking etc, and have no patience for bags that aren't made for walking. I use a Deuter SuperBike (35L) as a day pack - made for walking and cycling not carrying camera gear, with a water bladder, lunch, rain gear, etc and my camera in a small holster packed inside, and other lens in a padded lens pouch.
Here's what it looked like in Nepal:

LOL.

Agree though... not a Redback. I've got a few of those camping out around my front door that I'll need to napalm shortly. That's for the kid's sake only - don't mind them otherwise... they keep the roaches at bay.

Bit hard to tell from the angle but with leg hairs like that I would say that photo is almost certainly of a type of Lynx Spider.

Not bad. A little shallow DOF however try holding the stem in your fingers and shooting over your arm with the lens resting on your arm to maintain focus.

YEa, see what ya mean, will try tonight, anotehr 3 roses should be out by tonight.. hope theres some living on them :)

Theres more in my allblurryphotos folder

I liked the flower and the sunset blackrock...

This was the day I got my macro lens, concentrating on the spider waitin for it to move the other way, but it moved and I nearly chit my pants thinkin it was going to get me.

Thanks for the write up Alice.
I suspect 2 lenses might be a little limiting for me as i am using a crop. As such i think 3 would be much better - UWA - Lowlight - Everyday Zoom.
How did you find the focal length of the 35 on your crop?
Did you find that you had walk up closer to get the required portrait shots?

I used my 35 on the crop a lot in Lao, at the markets and at gatherings of friends where the action was up close, and people who didn't mind being photographed. It would be a bit short for portraits of strangers, I think you'd get lots of pics with that 'what are you looking at!' look.

My loitering - looking at buildings tactic with my 135 meant that I got several shots (accidentally) of people picking their noses in Nepal, that's how unaware of my intentions they were. This man just woudn't stop once he got going!
