As far as I'm aware, ALL Canon dSLRs have dedicated processors for AF. The DIGICs don't handle that stuff. Col | Flickr

I've got a 50D but no 1D III, so I can't verify. Really? Wow, I hadn't seen that. Kristin

My own personal write-up (https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=614858) spoke about a slightly better performance over the 40D, but since I've never properly used a 1D III I couldn't comment about that. I'm finding more and more uses for shooting at high ISO so that's my aim currently... Kristin

So on one hand, one should congratulate Canon for being able to maintain the level of noise of the 20/30D while nearly doubling the MP count. That's quite an achievement and so this will suit anyone needing to print very large. But on the other, it can be quite annoying for anyone who doesn't crave MPs - NOT because the noise is bad at 100%, but rather that it doesn't get too much better when you downrez to 8MP. That's the main problem (which I spoke about in my write-up). This is to be expected however, since downrezzing in post doesn't decrease the signal-to-noise ratio, so you're only 'averaging out' the noise. Col | Flickr
