Just wondering if anyone else has the Sandisk CF Extreme III USB Card reader? I'm thinking of picking one up but was interested if anyone had any thoughts on alternatives.

I have one of those and it does the job, I used a FW800 one recently, and DAMN that is fast, dumps the 8gb ex3 card in about 4-5mins...

Gosh, is it usual for common lenses to sell above NEW prices on eBay?

You know, I bought my new 5D in the hopes of selling my old one on eBay later on... ;)

I think AusPost is pretty reliable for delivery.. I like the Prepaid 3kg satchels. All you do is buy one of those over the counter (I usually buy several at a time for later use) and take them home, pack your stuff and then buy a Registered Post label over the counter when you're shipping off and you're done. No hassles at all. Personally I'd pack the lens into some decent box, fill it with bubble wrap, then line the exterior with a little more if you're worried about safety and ship it off in a satchel. :)

Okay, and that's covered for damage, the dood at the store said auspost doesn't cover anything for damage, says on their site that reg. post does :|

Thanks though, probably what I will do :)

Missed this one.

I have both the Sandisk Extreme III USB CF/SD reader and the Sandisk Extreme IV FW CF reader.

The FW one is heaps heaps quicker than the USB one using Extreme IV cards.

I found the USB one only about 5-10MB faster than my Dell 2407 CF reader at most whereas the FW one is a good 30MB faster (when downloading a card full of RAWs).

I have no quantitive way to test really... but if you have a reliable test method, then feel free to let me know, and I can test all three for you :)

I thought all card readers were much of a muchness - I had to buy one when I went to the USA because the laptop I was using with Vista wouldn't recognise my camera so I just hit the local computer shop and got a USB2 multi card reader for $25. Does the job when required.

You would think so, but it's not the case.
I did a test and wrote up a review of it on my gadget review site. Initially, i was looking to test the different Sandisk CF versions, but i encountered a slight bottleneck in my generic Laser 52 in 1 card reader. Throughput maxes out around the 18MB/s mark.

Firewire would definitely be faster. However, i don't have a Mac nor intend to keep using my desktop PC. So as such, im left to getting a USB version. The price differences is also quite significant - 45 dollars(USB) vs 100 dollars(Firewire).

I'm contemplating on the Sandisk Extreme III or the Kingston 19-in-1.

I have a 2407 card reader, Sandisk USB Extreme III, and Sandisk FW at FW400 and 800 (mac).

Shame that the FW doesn't work on the mini FW port... otherwise it'd been ideal.

Does your desktop already have one, if so what expansion card slot does your lappy have (big expresscard, little expresscard, PCMCIA, if it is big expresscard or pcmcia buy a cardreader for it, will be fastest of them all! :)

In my quick test I found my 3007 screen's inbuilt reader to give me 10MB/s write and 12MB/s read, while the extreme sandisk USB gives me 12.4 Write and 13.5 read, while I had the FW800 I found it to give me about 30write and 35 read, so big big difference!
All with Extreme 4 card

If you can get the program ATTO 2.34 from here (external link) you can run a few tests on through put. Set all settings to max as so

My laptop is about 2.3 years old, so im quite sure it's using PCMCIA. Not sure if it's cardbus or not.
Id prefer to get USB because it can be used on desktop and notebook. Plus no point in buying redundant technology.

Yah, but the PCMCIA won't get forgotten, and *should* be faster, My quick tests for in teh 1d3 showed that with ex3 it gets 8.35MB/s write and ex4 gets 10.24MB/s, Which when dumping a full buffer makes it take 3 seconds less...
Bear in mind this camera apparently cpas out at 12MB/s... :)
Oh, and welby it seems that it should cost about 15 (not 100% on the whole registered post thing) bucks for shipping...

yeah, it's more the CF -> Comp transfer that i am interested in. Not fussed about the Camera capture rate.
This notebook can't hack it for editting images anyway -> Pentium M - 1.73 Dothan.
As all the new notebooks use Expresscard, i think it would be a waste.
I notice that Dell are clearing out their XPS 13/15 series to make way for the new ones.
1700 bucks gets you 6 gigs of RAM and Vista 64 - 10% discount. Doesn't sound too shabby.

+1, still use it for games time to time(every week or so) and can't stand the UI... :)

Although the x301 really makes me wish that apple made computers like that :|
That new 17 MBP looks crazy 8GB of ram 8 Hrs battery, 256GB SSD, only dual core but...
And best of all the Anti-glare version means no glass, not crappy coating! Bit big though
