Evening Jim, wasn't sure if you would have come across that post seeing that it was oh so long ago. :P
Question is, how do you avoid blowing out the red? I presume normal techniques of avoiding highlights do the same job?

Finally, got to have a play with my Manning Bar shots.
Thoughts?

It works the same, just expose to the right according to the red channel of the RGB histogram.

I like the shot, I'd try cropping it a bit to remove some of the space to the top to make the subject a little larger in the frame

general maths:

If Angus buys a 200mm f.2 L lens for $1900us inc postage @ 71 us cents to the aussie dollar, then imports to Australia, at what price does he have to sell it here to make a profit

btw guys - insurance requires me to value my items at 'replacement value' - does anyone have a *rough* indication of what my gear is worth?

I don't know how you'd go about replacing them new for 10% less than what the cost is

I don't mind secondhand equipment though, that's why I'd base it on 10% (or 20% of D-D-P seems fairly reasonable, doing a cross-check with eBay) replacement cost.

If there's no secondhand copies readily available when you need them replaced what are you going to do? I'd be insuring them for full value, the cost difference to you per year in insurance is a minimal amount more and if you're going to insure you're aiming for peace of mind.
