Got a good deal of a a trade-in 350D against 1000D + kit IS lens;
Just wondering if anyone made this move - in practice how much of an upgrade is it?

IMHO, it's more of a lateral move - switching to SD will cost you a little more out of pocket, too.

There pretty much the same thing, same 7-point AF system for a start, not sure it'd be worth it unless its not an expensive change and you really want the IS kit lens and Live View (if the 1000D has it?)...

I would say going to a 1000D was a downward step. Going to a 450D would be slightly more logical - but even that wouldn't be much of an upgrade.

I gather the noise performance is much better than the 350D at higher ISO settings.

I use my 350D at high ISO's a fair amount of the time, and as long as you expose properly, all you need is a little NR in post production and it's all good.

Used 30d body will cost the same and provide a MUCH better feature set.

30D doesn't have live-view... I couldn't buy a camera without it once having had it:)

But only in jpg images.

Don't forget that the XS can only do 1.5fps raw, and for only as many frames as a XT. Either get an XTi or an XSi, XTi lets you keep CF cards, XSi lets you brag more. Also, at the rate things are going, a 30d (especially used one) is a very nice alternative as it is getting to be really cheap now.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

in the states it is the new rebel XS. 10.1 MP like the XTi, but with dig!c 3 14 bit color and the IS kit lens. with the IS lens it is at the chain stores for like $699. for only $100 more you get the XSi/450D which has 12MP, 3.5 fps instead of 1.5 fps, 9 AF points instead of 7 and a larger LCD (3" vs. 2.5") that is about it.

I enjoy Airshow, Ice Hockey, and Nature photography.

It's a poor attempt at competing with the D40 as its way over priced still.
