Just spend 2 weeks at a lovely coastal setting, took heaps of photos and found out that my 1D 111 and 500 did not want to work together. The only sharp images I could get was at absolute minimum focus range, the moment I had to shoot at any distance it was no good at all. I had 2 weeks to try and work out what the problem is, trying hard to make sure it was not me that was the problem. Tripod, remote shutter release even at high shutter speeds did not help. Deeper DOF, all kinds of settings on the camera, good light, low light nothing helped. Had to do most of my shooting with the 70-200 and 24-70. Sad thing was it was the perfect setting for the 500 and a lot of great photos was lost. I have not touched the "lens calibration" as frankly I did not know how to go about it. Any help on how to check the calibration will be appreciated as it is about all I can still do to "fix" the problem. I tried to see on my photos if the lens is front or back focusing but found that very difficult to work out. Any advice will be appreciated.

I tested my 100-300 recently by setting up a chapstick on a gridded cutting mat, setting up the camera on a tripod and AFing on the chapstick in good light looking slightly down on it.

Switch to Live View, zoom in... OOF. Go to AF calibration, rack it back 10 points, repeat test. Better, but still OOF. Rack it back 20 points, repeat test, focus is now acceptable.

Doing it on something with a grid (or even a newspaper) will help because you can clearly see where the plane of focus is falling and whether it is in front of or behind the target.

I'd be using One Shot AF, do it in good light. You can also take photos rather than using Live View but I find Live View quicker.. saves transferring to a computer or hooking your camera up.

Hi Goshawk,

I am sure that you took into account the haze in the air. That becomes a big problem especially around the sea as the distance increase.

Maybe show some photos so we can try to pinpoint the problem?

I don't have a cmera with micro-focus adjustments but have run the procedure on all my lenses and they are off enough that a 50D is in my future. It's a pretty straight forward procedure.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I recently calibrated my 300L f2.8IS and the difference is astonishing. I am in the process of calibrating ALL my lenses to my MKIII. I highly recommend it.

Well thank you everybody for your help, all information given will be used. As soon as I have tried the calibration I will also test the lens to see if it has worked.

Also note that some people have complained that when they calibrated their lens at one focal length, then it doesn't work so goo at other focal lengths.

I calibrated mine at about 30 feet and it works awesome at all focal lengths.
