Hi,

I recently purchased a brand new Sandisk extreme III (authentic) CF card and yesterday I had a chance to do some testing. Before the Sandisk CF card I was using a Generic brand "Adata" 2gb compact flash card.

I took a 5 minute long exposure shot with my new Sandisk Extreme III 30mbs card and after the shot was completed it took about 2-3 mins for it to record onto the card. The shots were done in Jpeg and after reviewing it on my PC it was about 5mbs.

Now in the past I've taken many long exposure shots with my cheap Adata card and after each shot, the picture was displayed on my screen and finish recording to the compact flash within seconds after it was taken.

Why is the Sandisk Extreme III so slow?

All shots done in the past was in Jpeg as well. The camera I use is a Canon 40d with the same lens, just different cards. Below is one of the shot that was taken last night, low res.

Are you sure you didn't have long exposure noise reduction turned on? Long exposures shouldn't take any longer to record than short exposures, ie <1s, even with slow cards (and the Extreme III is not a slow card!)

I have to double check. Does the Long exposure noise reduction function take a long time to record onto the card?

I will test it out again and see. Maybe in the past I didn't have it on?

With this on the camera takes a 'dark frame' - an exposure with the shutter closed - of the same length as your exposure in order to subtract any noise.

So while the recording to card is only done at the very end, the camera will be inactive for this time and only display the preview afterwards.
