Flash and bracket

I always use flash when shooting macro - however, I don't like the results of a ring flash. Ring flash lighting is too flat.

I use a Canon 550EX on a Siegelite articulating flash bracket and a Lumequest softbox.

Here is an image of my setup. This shot was taken when I used the 420EX. I have now switched to the 550EX for better manual capability. I will use this rig hand-held but, illustrated it on a tripod since I had no one to take my picture holding the rig. The Siegelite is no longer produced but, is often available on eBay for $25 or less. The handle of this bracket allows a solid hold when shooting.

There are many Chinese knock-offs of the Lumiquest softbox also available on eBay.

There are Chinese knock-offs of the Canon Off-Camera Flash Cord but, I prefer to use an OEM cord.

The nice thing about this rig is the low price and the versatility since you can use the flash for many other types of photography.

Ring flash was invented for the purposes of medical photography and other scientific pursuits, not for the 'macro photography as art'.

It is certainly my major objection to the magazine/fashion industry causing the popularization within the photographic community where it is ill suited to flattering the subject!

Nice setup RPCrowe. I need to make up something similar.

OP, looking at those pictures, I'd say go for a flash. You need to get really close to a subject with extension tubes to achieve focus (an inch or even less if you stack them). For flowers there are very few occasions when you'd want/need to get that close and most bugs won't tolerate you getting that close. Flash will let you handhold with faster shutter speeds so you can get sharper photos in less than ideal conditions and bring out more detail in your subject. Also, a good flash is always a useful accessory whether or not you're doing macro shots.
