After viewing some of the user photos in this forum, I'm salivating for a 5D... even a used one would be fine. I wouldn't even be considering a new body if I hadn't destroyed mine a few days ago. I am serious about developing my skills and love photography, but I'm not a pro and wouldn't even consider myself a seasoned enthusiast. What do you guys think? Is it too much to jump from a Digital Rebel XT to a 5D?

OR

Should I just buy another old, used Rebel model and wait for the 5DmkII. I would love to just save my money and invest in the new 5DmkII, but I need something to hold me over and get me through my next deployment in Japan. Right now all I have are lenses... I don't even have a point and shoot.

Open to all suggestions and I'm willing to get rid of my EF-S 10-22mm to make the jump to full frame sensor.

What I shoot most: urban, nature, macro, abstract, architecture, landscape, wildlife, travel.

What I shoot least: portrait, action, sports, wedding.

With your destination in mind, I would want a 5D. Your 10-22 should fetch good money for a reinvestment in a lens to cover that range. It won't take you long to learn the 5D with a little dedicated reading of the instruction manual and reading on this site.

The 5D is next on my list and I shoot mostly landscape with a 40D that I have owned for just a year. I will keep the 40D and just add the 5D. I wish I could have owned cameras like this during my Navy days!

Thanks for the advice Wally! Seeing as though fixing my old damaged XT doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment, I'll probably try to find a deal on a 5D. Full-frame would be awesome.

By the way, is that the "Runnin Roos" of NMCB 133 on your avatar? Hoorah Navy!

i switched from a XSI to a 5d...the controls are really easy on the 5d, i would actually say much easier to navigate compared to XSI, the scroll wheel is a big plus

You might want to consider a 40D or the new 50D, both have the higher frame rate for sports photography and have newer electronics than the 5D, which is a fine camera.

Hmm... I went the other way. My first DSLR was the 5D and I picked up a XT as my personal/home camera. It's a good upgrade but not necessarily for what your interested in. It's great for portraits, landscapes, and weddings but less great for nature wildlife and travel. As Wayne suggests, a 50D might serve you better. The IQ is at least as good if not better and the performance smokes the 5D in speed and features especially.

When the 5DII starts to ship you will see some really good deals on gently used 5D's I think.
