I just got aperture and i'm trying to figure somethings out. i'm hoping these questions are easy and some of you can help me.

1. when you edit photos, how do you save your adjustments? is that what the vault is for? how do you save to the vault?

2. is there a way to make a black & white photo with a selective color? i want to turn a photo b&w but leave the pink flower highlighted.

3. do you import photos into aperture directly from your camera or memory card? i realized that when i do that, it wants to import all the photos into a project and then i have to move them around. if i import directly onto my harddrive, then i can start a project in aperture and only import certain photos that i want. it seems easier. i'm just wondering how you work it....?

4. after you edit photos, do you usually save that editted version as a jpeg or anything? or do you leave it in aperture until you need to print it?

thanks,
Dan

Adjustments are automatically saved in the aperture library! it doesnt save a new verions of an image as such, just remembers the changes you made - which is great for space saving!!! You can export the version with your adjustments if needed using "export version"! quick little tip - Hit 'M' to toggle the master version, for reference!

The Vault is a backup solution for the aperture library, but remember that if your using referenced images, it doesnt back them up!

i'm not sure if you can create masks in aperture, i think that would be a job for photoshop!

personally i copy the contents of my memory card to a folder (on my ext. HDD) then import them into aperture as referenced files - i do this by selecting "In their current location" where it says "store files:" in the import window! Apertures vault wont touch referenced files, only adjustments!

you can however allow aperture to manage you files but it tends to dump the images in a folder with no real sorting methods which is a pain if you want to jus copy a certain folder! but by using this method, aperture will back them up in a vault if you use that feature!

again personal preference, but i leave aperture to store the adjustments unless i want to use the image, for printing or web use etc. - in that case i "export version"

You maybe able to do limited selective color by going to images, edit with, dodge and burn. You can click on the box in the top left and select dodge (lighten), burn (darken), saturate, unsaturate, blur, sharpen....never tried it, but I did see it there just last night....give it a try, who knows it may work. If it works for this, then we maybe able to sharpen selectively as well - say for the eyes.

Tried this and it does work for unsaturate and sharpening.
