I would get the 10-20, when I was in Italy, I needed a wide angle. I used my 17-85 and 35mm most of the time. I also used my laptop to download my cards everyday to. Cards are cheaper than a laptop:)

2GB CF cards are about $10 a piece, 4GB ones are $25. They're more like commodities these days.

Get laptop and rent lens? It all depends on what you need more I guess.

If your laptop is giving up the ghost then this is a great idea

If your current computer is so lousy that you can't run Photoshop on it, buy the laptop.

Get the wide lens!

You have other focal lengths pretty well covered... wide is what you are missing.

The laptop won't enable you to take photos while on your trip. When will you have an opportunity to return to take any photos you might miss?

Were it me, I'd want a fast, compact portrait lens too, such as the 50/1.8 if on a tight budget, or the 50/1.4 if I had more to spend.

You could always sell the lens when you return, and get the laptop.

Right. Get the lens then.

I would personal go wide before getting a telephoto lens. What about a 17-40L?
Otherwise, 10-20 is fine.

50mm is great but a little more specific.

Get the 10-20. It's a fine lens at the price and will allow you to get plenty of shots you currently can't.

Considered renting?

Taking photos with a fancy camera does not make me a photographer.

Well guys thanks for the feedback. Ive not considered renting, i dont really trust myself if its not my gear plus i know that if i like a rented lens too much im not going to want to give it back :)

Im going to look at the 17-40 but the 10-20 looks like a good bet. then im going to get rid of the tamron because its not particularly great and get the 70-200 because i mainly shoot sport
