I have been trying to figure out how to do some vignetting on photos. I have read a few tutorials, but all of my tries have come up very short. Every time that I try to do a vignette, it ends up looking like a square on the edge of my pictures. I am wanting it to be more rounded and "fade" into the picture. I have tried using a gaussion blur, but even with the levels set very high have had no success. I am using PSE, so I am wondering if that is part of the problem since I cannot create a "curves" adjustment layer, but am forced to work with the "levels" layer. Here is an example:

No suggestions? A link or some experience from a photoshop elements user would be great.

It looks like you are not fading the effect. It is not supposed to be a hard edge like that. The inner edge is supposed to fade out. There are free actions that you can get to do it for you.

I have some from here....http://coffeeteaphotography.blogspot.com …ents-pse-actions-and.html (external link)

How I usually make vignettes:

1. Open a hue/sat adjustment layer and pull the lightness down to -50 or so (you can re-adjust this later if you like).

2. Set a large brush at 0% hardness, 100% brush opacity, color black. Begin clicking on the subject. Keep clicking to broaden that bright area. Then change brush opacity to 10% (shortcut key: 1) and paint outward from the center to fade the gradation from bright in the center to darker toward the edges. Just paint until you like what you see.
