cool shots, I really like the fact that you arent afriad to post images that some would say are cropped badly etc.
I do think the are really great.

i think "badly" is a unfit word to use here... since it seems that the crops are very intentional and, i feel, work well...

I assume you're talking about #2 and 4... which I think both convey the message hes trying to send... number 2 contains a lot of expression in her eyes alone....

Cropped badly

Never be afraid to play with the edges of the frame especially if your searching for your own style. Some of the greatest photographers have used the edges to make some of the most interesting photographs.

Great job Ryan...

thanks peeps!

cdmonkey, yeah, you run the risk when posting on forums that people won't like things that are more "outside the box". but it's fine to break the rules as long as it works ... which is the tricky part.

dextar, airfrog, you guys are dead on. I rarely crop in post, i just frame it all that way in camera. i love using the edges of the frame, and using negative space. the one with just her eyes, that's exactly what i wanted was to convey the emotion with only a limited part of her face. the exposures and comps are all intentional :)

it's always useful to hear what people like and don't like! glad other people like the negative space compositions, etc.

dex, as far as post goes ... the majority of it is just touching up the RAW files in Lightroom. I generally drop the blacks a bit, bump up the "light" part of the curve a bit, and recover some highlights (since I like to overexpose by a fair bit, and like that bright look). I like a warmer white balance, too. I have some black and white presets in Lightroom that I like, and use when they work well. But for b/w's that I really care about, I bring it into Photoshop and use a few b/w actions that I wrote. One is just a simple gradient map overlay, and one is a channel mixer and curves action that (sorta) simulates Ilford XP2 Super film.

To get the aged, low-sat look in #4 and others, I use another Lightroom preset, that drops the vibrance and saturation, and adds some of a magenta split-tone to the shadows, among other things. For #2, I did the basics and then ran Cinnamon Toast from the Totally Rad Actions. I like a couple of the TRA's, but mostly I try and keep it pretty simple, and I like to do as much as possible in Lightroom.

It all starts in camera, and ends with adding grain to give it a more organic look. Hope that helps some! Just experiment a lot. I love how film looks, so I try and get it sorta close to that.
