So I have been in the market for a barebulb, taking into consideration Sunpak 120j's on ebay and Quantums, I am leaning towards just saving up for a Lumedyne kit. I do not need the most powerful, if anything, I will be using the strobe with a bounce card and will be using it for minor minor fill. (like 2-3 stops under ambient) I have seen some go for close to under $1000, curious as to what opinions you guys have and what experiences y'all have with various Lumedyne setups. Professor whom I am currently interning for uses Norman and that was a bit bulky in comparison from what I have experienced with Lumedynes.

Thoughts, opinions, experiences? Thanks guys

I have a Lumedyne kit: Two packs, each with a booster and 3 heads in total.
It's an older kit, about the same as what goes by the name "Classic" now.
50Ws, 100Ws, 200Ws. 400Ws with booster (or 800Ws with dual booster).

All this and some bits and pieces (filters, cables, lightmeter, snoots) fits into a Pelican 1510 (If I remember the number correctly; approx. 14 x 19 x 7" inside measurement).
I have been able to transport this, with three lightstands, a tripod and my camera by bike (then again, I'm Dutch ;))

Newer packs recycle a lot faster, and the new series also are way more adjustable.
New heads are more sturdy.

Light is nice. Mine are a bit slow to recycle, and coarse to adjust (full stops).

I use them as portable "studio" strobes though, not as "on a bracket on camera flash". Lumedyne does make an auto module I think, but all that stuff would be *way* too bulky on a camera IMO. If that's what you want, Quantum is also worth a look.

Hmm..yeah, well I would most likely be using for the slightest bit of fill, like I said..2-3 stops under ambient, enough to provide some detail in the shadow areas, etc. I was building up a kit and it came to just a little over a grand which isn't that bad, just wanted to see hear some input. Sorry for the short reply, I am in a bit of a rush and will get back to this tomorrow. Thank you though!
