Hi,

I have a 300d and I'm thinking about getting an ef 100-400 lens for the sports photography that I love. Will this lens give good results with this base unit or is there a better option.

Thanks

i'm not exactly sure what you mean...if you are asking if your 300D will push the boundaries of what the 100-400L can cope with, i highly doubt it. :)

the 100-400 should be perfectly fine for your 300D.

Did the 300d just get released in NZ :)

Jokes aside, it will work well, I used the 70-200 L on my 300d four years back with great results.

The only issue you might have is that this lens is a light hog. If you don't have very good to great light you are likely going to have to crank up the iso to get the shutter speed you need to stop action. At least that is my experience with this lens, which I use as my main wildlife lens. For a faster 400mm lens you will need to roughly triple your budget though. I love this lens for it's versatility and wouldn't give it up. I guess the only limiting factor would be your 300d's high iso performance.

Another good option might be the 70-200 f2.8 without IS for a couple hundred less $ than the 100-400 or the IS version for a few hundred more and throw on a 1.4 tc for when you need the reach. If I were shooting indoor sports that would be the route I would take. But what do I know?

i used 70-200 2.8 IS with 300D before, the camera was capable to take static object & focus point is not a problem with aperture 2.8 however as for moving object the performance of the camera isnt very good even when u use AI servo with hacked. However you might still able to take few shoots with it.

they will work together well if you have enough light. I have a rebel xt that I pull out for nastalgia sake once and a while and I am leary of shooting over iso400. you will run into problems with light.

Canon "Snappy".... Thanks Mom and Dad!

while the 100-400L isn't the best sports lens the 300d is the weak link here. getting even a 20d will offer major improvement.

i owned the 300d (three of them) and upgraded to the 20d.
