I just finished my first shoot with my new 50D. I shot about 300 pics, Changed 3 different brand lenses (Canon, Tamron and Tokina) several times, WITH the power on, and NEVER got an ERR99!
From all the naysayers in here, it sounded like I should have just sent it back, still in the box, and bought an XSi...

But seriously... I'm no pro, I just play one while the girls are looking. :) I sold my 40D to upgrade to this model and I have to say that I really enjoyed shooting it tonight. The camera performed flawlessly, the new screen was greatly appreciated by myself and the models as they checked their work. I have not had time to sit down to edit yet, but at a quick glance, they look good in lightroom 2.1.

For those of you still anxiously waiting to get your 50D's, and reading all the bad news on here about your new purchase. Fear not. It is possible to get a good one. Like someone said. You don't normally hear about the people that got perfect ones, because they are out shooting!

And for those that got a model that acted up... don't worry. With a little patience all will be made right. I've never heard of Canon releasing a new model, having trouble in the field, and just leaving it.

I credit tonights success to proper break-in procedures. At 6:15 p.m. mountain time, I fired the first shots at some very handsome ducks...8 p.m. sharp found me taking aim at an experienced model, and the rest of the night went swimmingly.
YMMV.

Regards, -Todd-

shooting some ducks first is key. Canon's firware is designed so that the first shot with a new camera scans for a duck. Then refernces the duck library and calibrates colour, sharpness and everything from how it knows a duck should look.... This step can not be left out, or else..... err99

Enjoy the toy... I'll be looking at picking one up after christmas... hopefully there will be some deals then...

Yes I did shoot in RAW tonight. Tomorrow when my eyes aren't so bleary I will take a serious look at the images. At a quick glance of the full sized previews I was pleased with what I saw. Tomorrow I will put a more critical eye on them, and share a few here in the forums. The ducks were shot during a quickly setting sun, and the models were shot Strobist style. No high iso stuff yet to dissect, but I should get an idea of what the increased resolution is going to do for crop happy guys like me.

Next tuesday will find me in a high school gym, shooting girls Volleyball at iso3200. I will report more real-world, non pixel-peeping findings then.

No not leaving it, maybe just denying the problem for a year or two :) :) ?

Yet another reason why Canon should produce their own religion. It may not work as intended, but it would do a great job trying! :)

Well, my own 50D has performed flawlessly too. I guess it's just the usual forum-amplified hysteria.

and yeah this was with a Pro body and noway Canon would spend that much time trying to sort out an issue on a xxD body. They'd just issue a firmware update and call it a "Phenomenon" _ they seem to like that word.

To the OP'er, glad yours is working out alright for you, mine didn't.

Ditto for me. I forgot to shoot the ducks---but at least mine has performed perfectly so far. About a thousand clicks of volleyball, football and kids.

So far I'm very impressed. Sorta makes me want to sell my 40D for another 50D!
