Not going to run and buy one yet but I am wondering if people (especially former 40D users) can see a difference with the 50D all cross type AF??

From what I've heard so far... The AF is bad, the build quality is laughable, its prone to Err. 99, and the jog wheel "feels funny".

For anyone who has already made the mistake of purchasing this atrocity... Please mail it to me so it can be properly disposed of. PM me for mailing address.

I couldn't tell firsthand since mine went fubar right out of the box. Some of the guys over naturescapes.net are reporting better AF tracking with BIF, over their 40D.

Here's an active thread on it: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=585886

I thought it was about the same as my 40D until I put my 300mm f 2.8 with a 2X TC on.
That combination was always a little sluggish on my 40D and is remarkably fast on the
50D. I'm pretty sure they changed something in the AF. So far I'm very pleased with the AF and with the camera in general.

I can only speak of the difference between the the 30D and 50D, and that difference is very noticeable, with the 50D being much improved.

The AF system is the same between the 40D and 50D. Attached is a graphic from the 40D white paper, describing the difference between the 40D/50D AF and the 30D/XTi/XSi AF

It's not day and night, but I've also noticed improved af servo speed shooting sports with the 50D vs. my old 30D.

I shot with a 40D and 50D at Road Atlanta early this month and I found a very noticeable difference between the two bodies when they both had my 70-200 2.8L attached. The 50D feels very confident in the way it focuses while the 40D wasn't as smooth and would occasionally be confused and go nuts. haha It could be a coincidence that this never happened with the 50D, but when it doesn't happen (to my memory) after well over 1000 shots in the same conditions, I attribute that to being a better system.

I didn't notice anything with the speed. It's just as fast as my 40D.

See this thread for my observations comparing my 40D to 50D's AF.

And my comment in that thread about the focus speed/accuracy of the 50D.

One of the latest reviews state..."Canon has improved the AF algorithm on the 50D and you only have to use it in fast action environments to realise it’ll easily handle most situations."

This is from the www.cameralabs.com (external link) review. This is the same thing I see in performance vs. my 40D. Both are good but the 50D just seems to have the advantage.
