I have just got my flash/umbrella bracket to go on top of my stand and the hot shoe mount is made of aluminium. With my 580EX II in the mounting the pins are sitting on the aluminium.

Is this likely to cause a problem with anything shorting out? I haven't used it yet, but I am tempted to put some tape in the recess so that the pins of the flash mounting aren't coming into contact with any metal.

Mike

I've never had a problem before, but have but a small piece of electric tape on the mount just in case.

I recently read on Strobist that you should cover the hot shoe with electrical tape as AB8ND has said;

Oh, and before I forget, as soon as you get it, if the shoe mount is made of metal PUT A PIECE OF ELECTRICAL TAPE ON TOP WHERE THE FLASH SITS. It could screw up the electronics in the month's-rent-worth-of-strobe you have sitting up there if you don't. I'm not kidding about that.

Thank you both. I'll do the same then, just to be on the safe side.
