First off I think everyone is intelligent enough to realize that these aren't scientific results by any means but with those that have volunteered to participant it can give fairly decent results on the overall results within this forum. Let alone others.

Are you going to buy the 50D? - 193 POTN members chose Yes

Have you had an Err99 on your 50D - 91 have given their response to this. If these are from the 193 above that's under just 50% with 39 out of 91 having had an Err show up. That's a pretty high percentage rate either way you look at. Granted this can sometimes be easily corrected by simply swapping the battery in and out but this just seems way too many faults across a wide array of users. Mine was one of the 17 users who had to return it cause the Err wouldn't clear up.

In my eyes that's a bad product pushed to market without extensive testing being done on Canons part. Just like in the Mark III AF fiasco. Canon did up the cost over the 40D's retail price, so hopefully they'd put more QC into development we'd hope -

It’s going to be interesting to see what the 5DMkII has in store for us. I’m speculating that the video mode is going to have some side effect.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

And stop right there because any sort of conclusion you draw after this is not valid. As the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out and that's what those two polls are (in a scientific sense).

Smith, your Poll is useless.

You compared how many users are GOING to buy a unit, to the number of errors reported.

The proper question is how many OWN one, and have had the errors.

So Julie you think these results from POTN members that participated is erroneous?

Self selecting polls are worthless.
You then make a baseless assumption on comparing the number of participants in two worthless polls.
Any conclusion on Canon QC is completely meaningless.

+1.

In addition, who really give a crap on this kind of poll? No one put a gun to your head or anyone else and tell you/them to buy 50D. You just have TOO MUCH time on your hand Smith. Please use it for something else more usefull. Geez..I wouldn't have this kind of respond if it is from a newbie but common on man, you're been here long enough and still post this kind of crap?

In that respect it would actually raise the number of error cases to non error cases if the 193 didn't actually make the purchase. Maybe only less than 100 as indicated in the Err Poll actually bought one.

There is such a poll already.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=583843

The news is not great though the sample size is still small. About 20% of those who bought one had to send it back. Another 25% had issues but were able to clear them. 55% have no issues. This is pretty consistent with other polls on different forums as well. Also, one major review site had a lens that ERR99ed as well. Clearly there is not enough data to draw definitive conclusions from, but early indications seem to point there being a strong possibility of some issue. Hopefully it's something that can be taken care of with a firmware upgrade and does not require more intervention like the MkIII did.

those polls, adjusted for bias and systemic error (the fact that there is no "i just want to see the numbers" option), would mean that there's likely less than 5% returning a camera for problems with it, and another 4% or so that had problems they fixed.

Much like the numbers on the mkiii, actual affected units are likely far less than 10% (in the mkiii's case it was a threshold issue, so while more units had the flaw, few passed that threshold and became problematic, the hardware fix was to solve that manufacturing problem) , and anyone that's taken even introductory stats knows that non-random polls pretty much ensure that the most vocal population gets their way even if they are a tiny minority.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

the same place they came up with these polls ;)

the only true statement is that the polls are flawed and will skew things to the negative side because people that dislike their camera are more likely to speak up than people that like it or find no problems.

oh yea, and the reason for mirror fix is also true, though numbers are not.
