Yes, the G6 is ETTL compatible, BUT the A/B thing mainly refers to the EOS camera series if i recall correctly, so it would be that some of the flash features do not work with the G6, AFAIK the 420EX is not capable of high sync flashing and second curtain sync with the G6.
HTH,

Yes, the G6 is e-ttl compabible with the 420EX. I own one and it works well. There are several features that don't work with the G6, like the high speed sync mode. But you can use a higher shutter speed than the default 1/60th of a second by using the shutter priority mode. It will sync up to 1/250th of a second.

I haven't tried the second curtain sync, but I can't see why that wouldn't work because you can set the G6 to use that mode. (Page 111 in the user guide.)

Canon 420 EX will work with G6. Just one feature will not work: AF-Assist. Hi-speed sync will work up to the max speed in G6's TV mode if the switch Hi-speed on the flash is switched to ON posistion.

I suppose never, the AF assist lamp only works with EOS SLR/DSLR cameras, because the external flash is blocking the biult-in one, the G6 has it´s own af assist light. But you CAN use the assist light of the 420 with the G6: when you put the 420 in slave mode, the AF assist lamp will permanently send lights out, so you can use this light for lowlight focus, then shoot.

One thing still annoys me when it comes to external flash and G6: the external flash will NOT work in continuous shooting mode (neither normal nor high speed), thats odd.

I didn't undestand this "But you CAN use the assist light of the 420 with the G6: when you put the 420 in slave mode, the AF assist lamp will permanently send lights out, so you can use this light for lowlight focus, then shoot".

The AF of the 420Ex or the AF of the G6 ????
