Well I'm no tech guru by any means, but I really like it.

As a studio, we do an extremely high volume of portrait sessions (like around 600 per year). After shooting, I do all my initial edits in Bridge and save my jpegs. They've changed some of the features for the better. For example, in CS3 when you added the vignette, it was from the original image - in CS4 the vignette is added STARTING at your crop. It also gives you a lot more control over size and how you add the vignette.

Also, we offer a couple different print levels to our clients, one of which we call the "custom" level print. Basically we do additional color edits and darkening of the sand/sky to bring attention to the people. We treat all images as smart objects and I just like having much more control in CS4.

How did you get a free upgrade to CS4?
I ordered Design Premium 1/29/2008, I doubt I qualify but I can hope.

I hear the dodge and burn is now a lot better. I'll download the trial and check it out. I upgrade if I don't have to re write the hundred or so actions i have.

The vignette process that you are describing, this must be in camera raw as I don't see anything in the crop tool that allows the option of adding a vignette as the same time or even controlling a vignette.

I will agree that CS4 is worth the upgrade price. It has alot of things for both photographers and illustrators.

I had to rewrite mine, but I did not dive into the help file much to find out if I was able to import previous ones from CS3. The dodge and burn may be better, but anyone that uses CS3 regularly will tell you there are much better and non destructible ways of dodging and burning with even more control than those tools. Personally, I'm still pissed about these annoying Live Preview healing and cloning brushes, and the fact there does not seem to be any way of turning them off. Corel (Painter X) had rendered brushes with the option to turn them off, why not you adobe?

On a more positive note, CS4 is much quicker on the loading and saving side of things, and the tabbed interface is a much appreciated feature. The openGL zooming runs smoothly once you get everything tweaked right. The Auto-Blend feature is great when it works, but I've still not found a use for the new cropping additions everyone has been raving about. Why not just take well composed photos from the start?

I need to stick with CS3 for now. Adobe told me it would cost $499 USD for me to upgrade my CS3 Design Standard suite to CS4. I can't justify that expense with 2 kids in college. The upgrade would not have any advantage for me. And heck... most computers at my office (marketing/graphics dept. for a real estate company) are still using CS or PS7 and we're doin' just fine!

Along the top menu, there's a button > Toggle the clone source panel. Then uncheck "Show Overlay"

You are my hero. It does seem to help the lag issue quite a bit. Nice.....why could I not find this in the help files?

I have the beta pdf of the help files and I saw it in there. It certainly is possible that it got missed in the final copy. I am still running the last build from the beta program which did not have a direct link to the help files from Photoshop but we could download a pdf from Adobe. I will certainly check this when my copy of Photoshop arrives from Adobe.

I must say that I have no lag time when using the preview on these tools right now. Hopefully they didn't screw that up when they did the final build.

Simply save them, and load them in CS4.
Should work AFAIK.

First hit in google: Click (external link)

If you prefer the older method, the live preview can be turned off in the Clone Source panel by checking Show Overlay.
