I was lucky enough to capture this GBH catching a small snapping turtle. It took him about 40 minutes to finally get him down the hatch. I have seen plenty of fish being taken ,but this is a first for me.

Oh Man, I'll bet you couldn't believe that could you? I just don't see how they can swallow some of the things that they do.

Then how their guts can process something going down live, and then get rid of bones and shell.

Great catch. I don't think it was alive when it went down. Thats why they stab them so many times with their beaks.

What a fantastic opportunity to see this. Given how much effort the GBH put into getting this guy down the hatch and, no doubt, how much effort he will have to put into getting him back out the other end....he may never dine on turtles again.

This is a really wonderful catch (for the photographer) and, I suppose, for the GBH if he has a palate for snapper!

Great job getting this image.

Dave

You can see in the first shot the lower bill is into the body cavity, as Mitch mentioned I think they are close to or kaputt before being swallowed. if not can you imagine the discomfort of even a small snapper's jaws locked onto the inside of your stomach lining?

The GBH was powerful enough to lay the turtle flat on the ground and pierce completely through the top and bottom of its shell. Then it took a couple minutes of shaking to get it off his bill. He did this several times and the turtle was dead before he even tried to swallow it. It stayed in his throat for a while.
