Hmm, here we go I guess.. First of all, theese where shot before I got my 10D. They where shot with a P&S called Minolta DiMage Xt which is my fathers. So quality sucks. They where shot to show fellow geeks exactly the same as we're all showing each other now. How do we live.. But I got a picture of the desktop there, so I just use it. Believe me, things have at least not getten _ANY_ tidier, clearly oppsite after I no longer have a GF to clean it every now and then =)

This is at least how my desktop looks. Unusal tidy at the moment that picture was taken.

This is my "workhorse". The text on (some of) theese pics are written in norwegian, for that I apologize, but I guess you'll manage to extract most of the specs anyhow.

Here's my "family". I also have a 1m high inflatable TUX, but he's got a hole now, so he won't hold the air :/

And lastly, my two servers. They act as gateways for my workstation, my dads workstation, and his laptop. They also host www.vvizard.net (external link). Although not much to se there atm, although it's the one hosting theese pics. One of them also acts as vvizard.net's mail-exchanger, and they run a couple of different SQL-servers which I use in development of my freelance-work. They both run OpenBSD, and although the explanation will mean nothing to you not speaking norwegian, you can probably understand the specs of them :) They're not exactly powerfull anymore, but more than enough for what they do :)

And lastly, in case anyone haven't yet figured out I'm more of a geek/measurebator than photographer, here's my bookshelf to prove it ;)

I've just turned 20 now, and this year I'm back in my parents basement while I attend one year to a school here. Yeah it's dull, but heck, I've lived by myself before, and although that has it's advantages, I sure as **** couldn't have afforded a 10D, and L/EX glass then =) So this year I'm using to save money, and almost everything I earn go straight into photo-equipment and alcohol to kill my mind now :) Still can't wait until Autumn, to get my ass out of this basement again, and move somewhere new, with all fresh things to shoot again :-D Happy photography!!

How does someone in Norway develop such mastery of English? Your language skills are way beyond what they teach in high school----even by Norwegian standards, I'm sure.

You're quite an impressive young fella.

Belmondo: Actually I have no clue. I didn't even know that I spoke good english (by english standards). I know I speak fairly good english by norwegian standards, but what to expect? I've spent _WAY_ to many hours a day in front of a computer-screen since I was 7 years old. I've surfed the Internet from it's "start" (as we (most people) know it), and dialed BBS's before that. The first couple of years I think I used my dictionary more than my keyboard ;) Beeing 10 years old, home alone, surfing the net really force you into knowing how to spell "p**sy" in english :-P Then with the years, I've luckily come to use computers/Internet for more "serious" things (as can be seen from my bookshelf I guess :-P) But I think it all boils down to one simple fact. Most things on the Internet are written in English, and when you spend several hours a day reading articles on the net, participating in english forums, and hanging out on english chat-channels on IRC, you pick up something along the way. You have to! Cause I've been sleeping through english-class (and most other classes for the sake of the matter) at high-school with severe hangovers, still getting good grades. Guess I'm just lucky :) But this year I'm taking the required math/physics for engineering, and those I can't sleep through. Believe me, I tried last year ;)

That was another long post by me, and hopefully it doesn't contain too many spelling-errors. I have to admit I paid more attention to the letters in this post than I usually do, so here's my english at it's best (without a dictionary though)

So if you think I speak english good, then thanks. I seriously had no clue about that =) I'm normally the person who excuses his lack of english-skills in chatrooms when making the first post. And usually the replies have been: "No need to excuse, you're not any worse than most of the other foreigners" =) At least I've _NEVER EVER_ heard anyone tell: "No need to excuse, your english is good!" =)

So happy shooting :)

I'd be willing to bet you've learned how to spell lots of words you can't use here. Also, I'd be willing to put your command of the language up against at least half the 'native-speakers' who post here---myself included.

I can't imagine the thought processes involved in being bi-lingual (or bi-anything for that matter). I've often regretted taking Latin in school, but back then, that was the thing to do for 'academic majors.' About the only thing it's been good for is to have a little insight into some of the legal terms that are commonly thrown around in business.

We're lucky to have you amongst us.

Tom

Bi-lingual (what's an english word I didn't know :)) isn't to bad when you start with it early enough. Around age 9 or so in the norwegian school-system. It doesn't get fun until you start to get quad-lingual (can I say that? :-P) or better :) I rate my language skills like this:

1) Norwegian
2) PHP
3) English
4) C++
5) New-norwegian

  • And on the late nights, theese may change, so that PHP is my native =) (I'm doing a lot of freelance coding in that language)

  • Yeah actually.. One language wasn't enough, some jerk found out 100 years ago (or so), so he invented the "new" norwegian. Which of course, we all _HAVE_ to learn way to many years at school. Only exceptions are if you're bad at regular norwegian, then you can have extra-teaching in that instead. Believe me, most kids in Norway aren't to fond of the guy inventing new-norwegian which they _HAVE_ to learn at school, but no-one uses, except in some parts of the country. They're very related, and people speaking new/old understand each other perfectly. We just have to learn the grammar, since there's a (imho) stupid law here, saying that if you work within the government, and someone writes you a letter in new/old norwegian, then you have to answer it in the same language.. Plain stupid in my eyes :/

I also took a shot at german in school at the age of 13 or so. I was there (against my will actually) for 1.5years, until the teacher had enough of me never wanting to open a book, so one day she threw me out =)

Well, we've made a good effort at hijacking this thread now =)

  • I am convinced that PHP will become the "official" language of the world, it should, it is so much more fun than English :-)

Yes indeed it is! and it's great for late-night or drunken coding, since it's accepting virtually unlimited sloppyness compared to other high-level languages (computer-language or not =))

Tom, you forget that pretty much most of the rest of the free world outside of the US (except for perhaps the French :) ) speak at least another language or more, and do so as a matter of fact. It doesn't change the fact that Wizard is indeed an impressive fella.

Pretty good - I think I managed to offend two countries in one post!! :D

Drunken coding - I've never heard of that one, but I suppose that's safer then drunk driving or an even more hazardous practice called beer-goggling. :D

If this works correctly, you'll see a slightly fuzzy non-flash (EXIF says 1/10 sec. @ F-2.8, 100 asa) picture of my work area. Its a catch-all where I do everything from surfing to paying bills to writing the occasional report for work. But its fast becoming an area where I play with photographs most of the time. And when my SLR finally goes digital, I'll be playing even more.

This was a handheld picture, BTW. I was too lazy to drag out the tripod. Here's the flash version:

For some reason, I like the non-flash version better. Less "stark-looking".

I don't necessarily believe in reincarnation, but if I do get a second chance, I promise to try to do better.

Wait...... I can count to twelve in Swedish. Does that count?

Ilya this was such a great idea...I am enjoying it a lot.
    Here is my mess

Anyway, this is my setup, the picture was taken with Canon D60 with a 17-40 F4L, the box on the floor is a no-name Athlon 900 MHz with 750 Mb ram, and is there only to use the Agfa Duoscan and the Nikon LS-2000 scanners, which are both SCSI (BTW, does anyone know if those SCSI to Firewire connectors would work with those scanners?). The laptop underneath the LaCie 19" Monitor (calibrated with Colorvision spider/Optical 3.7) is a Compaq 1.2Ghz with 1 Gb ram and I have 2 120Gb and one 80 Gb Firewire drives for storage and backup. On the wire shelf near the battery charger there is the Tripper 40 Gb for storage on the road.
this is a closer view of the desk-mess:
