Just thought I'd give the heads up to the Americans.

Camera buying is in an odd situation now where the US dollar has risen in value in relation to the canadian dollar. But canadian pricing on camera gear still has not adjusted for it. So before the stores make their adjustments, now is the time for Americans to buy camera gear from Canada.

(all conversions done at xe.com)

For example, 40D for US$757 at TCS
http://www.thecamerastore.com …ameras/canon-eos-40d-body (external link)

5D refurb for US$1592 after conversion.
http://www.cameracanada.com/eNet-car...0296B067&type= (external link)

Or a brand new one for US$1769
http://www.cameracanada.com/eNet-car...296B003&type=1 (external link)

50D for US$1176
http://www.thecamerastore.com …ameras/canon-eos-50d-body (external link)

1D mark III for US$3789
http://www.thecamerastore.com …ras/canon-eos-1d-mark-iii (external link)

1Ds mark III for US$6696
http://www.cameracanada.com …ct.asp?pid=2011B003&type= (external link)

70-200 F/2.8 IS for US$1539
http://www.henrys.com …goryId=10412&itemID=75202 (external link)

Heck if you want something exotic like the 400 2.8, save a few hundred at US$6282
http://www.thecamerastore.com …s/canon-ef-400mm-f28l-usm (external link)

There are even rebates in canada happening now, so if you have a friend in Canada who can buy it for you, you'll get an additional C$250 off the price.

A situation like this can't last for long. The dollars will either even out again or canadian stores will jack their prices back up to compensate. So get it while you can.

Hi,
Those are some great prices. Question if you know. What happens to the warranty for a Canadian buy shipped to the USA? Is it like buying "gray market" lens?

I emailed Canon with the warranty question and they came back with"
If you purchase equipment in Canada, or it is a Canadian product- then
the Warranty is valid in Canada."
So while it looks like we can save $$ buying from a Canadian store we don't have any warranty coverage if we have problems with the gear.

I dunno. I think it's bull. I buy from B&H all the time and they honour the warranties here in Canada without question. I thought most warranties were "USA and CANADA" or "International".

And all the links provided above are Authorized Canon dealers, and are top notch retailers. No shadiness with them at all.

congrats on the 5K posts :)

and it may be that canon 'Officially' doesn't have to honor the warranty, however from most of the stories Canon is really good at honoring warranties as long as you purchased it at an authorized dealer.

I can't believe how much ground the Canadian dollar has lost in the last month. I hope the price of gear doesn't go up here! For the lowest price in Canada you can check out http://www.photoprice.ca/ (external link) Basically our US friends get a ~15% discount from the Canadian price, not sure if shipping might spoil the deal or not.

Just had a look at henrys. 12.95US to ship. From their website:

US Shipments by Xpresspost USA

Shipping time:
6 to 10 Business Days
These values include shipping, handling and insurance. Any local taxes, duty or brokerage are your responsibility.

They have a sale on the 50D and bag/grip/battery right now: 1225US + 13 bucks shipping!

It is $1499 CAN. I ran that thru my exchange rate calcuator and it came to $1,184.43 USD! That is a kicker deal especially when it includes the grip (Henry's). I know if you order from overseas, you pay duties but does that apply ordering from Canada?

I think the price at henrys is 1449.99 ( http://www.henrys.com …D=246001&categoryId=10429 (external link) ) When I run that number thru xe.com it comes out to $1221US.

There shouldn't be any duties on photography gear when exporting from Canada to the US. There isn't any when importing to Canada from the US. I would think that you would have to pay some tax on the order. You could always call a Canadian retailer and ask them!

I am in TOronto and am debating on getting a 40D. I notice the camera store selling for $899.

I wonder if they will jack up there prices or if the exchange will drop back to how it was before (more on par with USD). I really hate the fact it took forever for retailers to adjust to US prieces (years) and now with the depreciation I wouldn't be surprise if they do it in a matter of weeks. Canadians are being ripped off by local retailers.

I can't seem to find any use 40Ds for anything lese then 800 and really for $100 more i can have a new one. I am wondering if I should wait for a drop in price or get one now in case they increase the sale price.

Also if there will in the short term.. will there be sales on teh Canon 40D??

Oh Hai!
