This is my first attempt at it. How do you guys think it came out?

Regular overexposed image (I had borked when taken, thought it would be a good candidate due to this)...

HDR image (processed from pushing the single RAW file 2 Stops down and 2 Stops up)...

The HDR is definitely better, but you should find a better subject. Nobody wants to see a kit lens, no matter how many exposures you smash together.

Definitely but I was just experimenting with HDR from a file that was ruined by bad exposure, no intention of using this as fine art.

Anyways, there are limitations with using a single RAW file. I've noticed lots of noise in different parts of the image from trying to pull detail back from underexposed areas (even when shooting at ISO100). I need to try my hand at real HDR using bracketing from the camera itself.

Actually, the HDR one is a better shot. You were able to glean some more detail out of the blacks on the lens barrel, and saturation in the colors. Still, HDR from a single RAW is limited, although there are some excellent examples posted here in the forum. I think it takes a particular scene to be effective, and maybe perfect exposure to start with.

That kit lens has gotten me through some rough times ;_;

My gear consists of a Rebel XT, its Kit Lens and the Canon 50mm f/1.4. Rollin' on a budget lol

Here's another example with a "better" subject!

I had taken this last year, during the Summer. This is with the (what is considered to be) "lowly" XT Kit Lens.

Another example (though the color processing is different)...
