I have shot similar images with my canon 100 mm 2.8 and I just can't stand the DOF. I like doing macros with a at least 1 inch of sharp focus and a nice bokeh, so I understand. Try a brighter colorful background with some sparkles on it that reflect the light.


Canon 5D Mark II gripped with a 24-70L and that's how I roll :]<

the wonderful 100mm f2.8 macro

Considering that the flower is planted outside I don't have much of a choice for the background. And the way its planted... the flower is in the sun while the background is completely in the shade so it gets very dark. Also that day was cloudy and windy so for me to get a good exposure and stop action I needed a wide aperture hence the shallow DOF. I do have a 430EX flash but I'm very iffy on using it for macros.
