I am 6'2" and need a monopod that isn't very expensive but will do a good job. I have a 40d and plan on getting a 70-200. and if anyone has any recommendations for a quick release head that would be great too!

Thanks

Looking for 60d, PM with what you have!

Any of the Manfrottos will do you fine. The 679,680,and 681 are all good, reasonably priced monopods. I use the 679 with the 3232 tilt head and I'm quite happy with it. I believe Kirk markets a 3232 head with one of their quick release clamps mounted to it.

they do and i have one. the manfrotto RC2 is quicker to mount and dismount tho and the only real disadvantages i can see are the manfrotto plate will twist and there is more slop in the connection.

i really don't feel the slop is an issue with monopods tho and at three times the cost for the kirk/manfrotto i would stick with the manfrotto tilthead for monopods.

the only reason i went to the kirk/manfrotto tilt head is because i upgraded my ballhead and tripod and i wanted to stick with one system (arca).

so while i like the kirk/manfrotto head the manfrotto is a better buy and is a little easier to use.

I purchased a 681B a little over a year ago because I figured I needed the extra height. Later I even added on a 488RC2 ball head that I bought when I bought a tripod. Well the irony in this all is I currently will find myself kneeling while taking pictures of sports of most kinds, sure I still use the monopod, but I have realised that height isn't everything. Thus the moral of this is don't forget to account for your shooting styles when purchasing equipment.

Final thoughts - I have no regrets buying the 681B and 488RC2 they both make an excellent combo and will support a large amount perfectly.

I agree that the RC2 is a bit quicker to use than a Kirk (or virtually any other) Arca Convertible QR and is certainly less expensive. However I use the Kirk MPA-1 (which is the Manfrotto 3232 with a Kirk Arca Convertible QR system) because I like the Really Right Stuff L-Bracket for mounting a non tripod-ring equipped lens.

I use Arca Compatible heads for both my tripods and it is only logical that I would go with an AC swivel head for my monopod...

By the way, Manfrotto distributes a mounting plate which reduces the camera's tendency to slip or twist in the portrait position because of a lip on the plate.
