Was centering the cooling towers too "in your face", or about right? It's the only shot I took (except for one 90* rotate that I don't like as much).

40D with 70-200 at 180, 1/50 at f/16. I precessed it some in Lr2 and PSE7.

  • The haze takes a lot away from the shot for me (the colors progressively get worse (IMHO) the further back in the composition you go).

  • You do not see enough of the cooling towers or the billowing steam from them to be "in your face" (people may have a hard time even knowing what they are) and they are too centered for my tastes.

  • There is a distracting powerline running through your shot in the foreground.

  • I think you may have some dust on your sensor (upper left).

Thanks! How do I get rid of the haze? I know how to get rid of the dust, and I can move further left to eliminate the power line (I thought I'd done so), and I can uncenter the shot. The sun sets behind these towers and I want to get the picture this evening. That haze seems to always be around here, though. I need to find a way to make it part of the scene, instead of a distraction from it.

The haze is really dependent on the weather/environment....you may be able to filter a little out with a haze filter or a CPL (perhaps even a GND).

The sunset idea may work better, as the foreground, the cooling towers, and the hills could be used as a silhouette.

I would definitely try to incorporate the steam (all of it until the point of dissipation) into the overall composition. The way it is now in your picture, it seems to truncated.

My thoughts exactly.....I'm not too far from there. In fact, if it's a nice day out, I can walk outside my office and see the smoke :)
