So yesterday I goto the Canadian Auto Show and decide to use this new method of photography I have developed(ok it has probably been done before). I know I wont be using the 10D or my 70-200, so I decide to take them anyway.

I sling that setup (10D and 70-200) around my shoulder while carrying the 1DII and the 24-70 in hand. Now if you go to the Auto Show every year, you know that it's always packed. So getting to the nice cars, I noticed tons of people. All I do is grab the the big lens with hood and everything and point it at my car of choice. I swear I feel like Moses as the people part and very generously open a nice path to the car, I even have people take the initiative to remind others not to get in my way. I then drop the camera and make a face("this lens wont do it" kinda face) and quickly take the shot with the 1D. Doesn't hurt carrying two cameras either, well my shoulder does, but...............

Man did I get some sweet shots yesterday, time to use that one more often.

Any tricks you guys have? feel free to share.

Wonder if you'd get the same "parting the red sea" effect using the 24-70 on a 300D... :(

hahahahahaha. That's a great idea. I never would have thought of bringing my 300mm to the auto show, but I just might have to now. I'm not sure the people of New York will be as polite though.

i think ya got lucky.
around here at car shows they seem to be paying attention to the cars and not to a photographers. i can understand kids as they are not fully aware they might be in someones way, but adults they should have some respect. heck it only takes a couple seconds to get a shot. would it hurt them to wait? or even go around?

are you gonna share some of these pics with us?
please please pretty please...

i enjoy cars verry much.

I guess, it's that whole Canadian thing haha. You know, what Canadian bacon says about us? well I guess we are. :)

Ya ill post some later. I'm really picky with cars, particulerly with that fact that I hate most cars made outaside of Europe. So I only got about 20-30 shots I consider "keepers"............Jag, BMW, Mercedes didnt have anything special this year. Ferrari, Lambo, and a Volvo........

I just carry my tripod over my shoulder on a strap, or attached to the camera.

Even though its only a small camera, having the tripod is enough to clear a pretty good path :)

When I was still shooting on my G3 and film EOS30, I would head out to jobs I had, I would turn up with the fairly impressive looking EOS30+Grip with the 28-105 and lens hood, 99% of the time the customer would be impressed with the package, at that point I would comment that today I think we will shoot in digital, and pull out the G3! Never intended on using the EOS, just looks a lot more professional that turning up with a G3!

hmmm
so i guess i need to buy a film body so i can have two bodies to make the impression and get the shot at car shows.

i know i could afford a film body before another digital body.

since i would have to buy glass for each.

thanx for the tip.

well i cannot say i have a particular car i like more than another.
i grew up with muscle cars around alot. now with the import scene pretty big i can dig them as well. euro cars...well they are nice too.

i just enjoy cars period.

I use to work some blues festivals here in San Diego, and have backstage passes from all of them. I'll pin two or three of the passes to the strap of my camera bag. I have no idea why this gives me any credibility whatsoever; I was always working artist check-in, not taking pictures. Still, people always tend to give me the benefit of the doubt.

It's the same mentality when you see someone at a ski lodge who has a bajillion lift tickets attached to the zipper of his jacket. You figure he's there because he's supposed to be there...

When i go to basketball games i just walk by the ticket lady with my 70-200 attatched to my camera and hold it up to her like "I'm above tickets lady"

You can use cheap glass on the film body - but make sure it's a black body with a grip. After all, you're not going to actually use it, just look impressive!
