I know there is a free service provided by Canon Canada to clean the sensor in my camera. I was curious to know if this was a "while you wait" type of service or do they make you leave the camera with them for 2 weeks..or something like that?

Follow up question; Is the head office in Mississauga, Ont. the only location where this is performed or would stores like Henry's Camera provide the same free service?

Cheers!

it's only the head office in mississauga and i would call in before hand to make an appointment so you don't have to go back there.

Take it to where you bought it. They should be able to clean it and do it for free right in front of you, assuming you bought it at a dealer and not mail order that is.

I'm not sure if you actually can call and make an appointment. I seem to remember that they offer a 48 hour turn around for cleanings. But then again I haven't been there in 2 years.

Wow shops in calgary must be generous. In Ontario if you bought from a brick anr morter store chances are very high that it's either a big box store or henry's. The big electronic stores are no use for cleanings and henry's actually tells you to go to canon.

Canon Calgary will usually clean it within 24hrs, last time they were not as eager to help as they were before, guess they were busy. They also send all lenses to Ontario for repair now.

They seem to send everything to ontario now. I always drop off my gear in calgary but it always gets shipped back to me from ontario. bodies, lenses, whatever. And they usually come back NOT repaired.

Never tried getting the sensor cleaned for free so can't comment on that.

So the consensus seems to be that Canon Canada will not do the cleaning while you wait and none of their authorized dealers will perform this action either unless you're buying a cleaning kit from them, which seems counter to the ideal of free cleanings, as is indicated in my owner's manual.

These "Arctic Butterfly cleaning kits, how expensive are they? Do they work? Can something be fashioned home-made style that will accomplish the same thing or is their brush/cleaning chemicals unique?

Thanks for your responses!

Cheers!

Artic Butterflys are about $100 in Canada. They are a very soft thinish brush in a spinning handle to give a charge to attract the dust to the brush and I suppose it flings the old dust off.

You could also check out sensor klear, a lenspen for your sensor, they are about 10 US and 20 in canada from what I have seen.

I use both the first thing I do is puffer then AB then sensor klear if the dust persists. I used a wet clean the first couple of times on my 5D and it does not need it now. I suspect some 5Ds had a bit of oil on the sensor and so attract dust. The wet clean would remove oils. The oils would be bad for an AB.
