#1 has a lot of character. Interesting face and pose. I think the high-key accentuates it all.

#2 having used up all my praise on #1, what's with this one? There's no point of interest.

The lighting is not doing you any favors - bright sunny day and direct rays of the sun on your subject in #1.

In #2 you have a better light because he seems to be in the open shade there. However, even with that more diffuse lighting you need to get control of the background so that it's not blown out.

Thanks all!

They were both spur of the moment shots, that's how he reacted when I went "Joe, picture!"

Here's what #1 originally looked like. I tweaked in in ACR to give it the final look and make it a little more interesting. And yes I wanted to leave the window frame.
