i've been shooting film for years but brand new to digital. picked up a 40d in may and been shooting jpegs mostly. just switch over to raw to shoot a friends wedding just as a friend photog. real photog was there too. i dont know if its my camera or my settings or my lens but my shots seems to be really noisy. maybe because im looking at them at 100%? i have no clue where to go with this. i want to put up a sample too but dont know what specs do u guys want me to post it at. 100% crop? 72 dpi? 600x480? as soon as i know what specs to post it, i will post it. if someone wants a full raw image i can prolly do that too. might have to link it to my flickr or something.

Usually noise comes from underexposure. Properly exposed shots, even at iso 1600, have very little noise.

yea i can tell that my indoor night shots at the reception was definately noisy due to the low light. i had my 580ex2 bouncing from the low ceilings but were only shooting at iso800 as i was worried about going higher for noise. do u have any suggestions on posting up samples correctly for people to judge if my settings are decent and that its not equipment but more user error.

Dpi is irrelevant. Just post a 100% crop, about 500 x 500 px. And post your exif info.

My suggestion: upload one of your raw files to yousendit.com (external link) and post the link here

ok here's one of the low light shot. this one is straight processed from the raw without any changes thru dpp. the previous image had changes made with exposure white balance and picture style and a little bit sharpness but thats it.

this is just processed straight from raw:

How much sharpening in DPP?

Looks oversharpened to me...Try "2" with no noise reduction and see if your results improve. Then sharpen in a program where you can control what gets sharpened.

PS, the link asked for a password from me.

sorry bout the flickr link. it seems their site like to screw with me. i set the permissions to everyone but it still doesnt let people see it.

it seems that my dpp sets sharpening automatically to 3 when i view them. how do i change it back? so the first image was set to 4. second one was under default at 3.

Just move the slider.

I believe this is post proccesing induced, I would first suspect sharpening and would also try to get the exposure right in camera. Under high iso it's best to overexpose slightly via EC than to try and bring them back up after the fact.

My 40D/17-55 is cleaner than that ...hence my putting the blame on Post proccesing. The good news is you shot in raw, so provided they were not underexposed hidden somewhere in there is a cleaner image.

My default conversion is 2 sharpen on the raw panel, no sharpening on the rgb panel, and no noise reduction.

The only thing I adjust is WB and exposure if neccasary. the rest gets done elswhere.

There is less in this one than the first but I would expect better. How much did you boost the exposure in DPP?
