I recently heard a rumor form a Canon Pro that Canon has plans to introduce all their lenses with IS and offer a manual focus version of the same lens with the same or larger apertures.

The concept sounded very similar to the days wide aperture FDs.

He further commented that this would require the exhausting of current inventories and how this concept was put on hold when the digital market exploded into the everyday consumer market it is today.

I do not recall the conversion well enough to say if this was just on the L line-up? This may or may not make any sense for regular consumer lenses as most people will not want to manual focus.

Can anyone confirm hearing a similar rumor or has this come up on the forum prior?

This all started in a conversion about the 5D Mk2 market introduction and eventually seeing the full frame sensor move into lower consumer models. I expressed interest in a 24-70 and he commented that the lens market/lineup would drastically be changing in coming model introductions as the 5D mk2 took market share from the D700 and D300. This may be years away or around the corner????

Comments?

This rumor is nuttier than a fruitcake.

You can expect Canon to offer an extensive line of manual focus lenses in the EF mount just about never.

I will agree that Canon plans to slowly add IS to most all of the line over time, though some stuff (UWA, tilt-shift) will never get IS.

I have to agree with the above. I don't even understand how this rumor begins to make sense.

First off, why would they make an exclusively MF lens when you could still manual focus with an EF lens?

Secondly, how does putting an AF unit limit a lens to smaller apertures?

I just don't understand the logic. Then again, I've struggled to understand the logic of many R&D departments (ie. BMW's persistence with iDrive).

You're probably the first to start this rumour here.
If I wanted MF only lens, I'd get a Zeiss, or M42 lens with EOS adapter.
Mass market appeal is all about high MP, efficient Auto mode and full AF lenses.
And its pure speculation that the 5DII will take market share from D700 and D300.

This ought to be moved to the Rumour section.

I would expect in-body IS before full lens line-up IS.

A constant 2.8 full frame L series walkabout is way overdue

Just curious but in what ways do you find the 24-70mm f/2.8L disatisfying?

Canon pro, huh? Is he the pro company comedian? I am sorry, but either he/she is a COMPLETE idiot, or was really playing games with you.

they may want a bigger focal length range, kinda like a 24-105, or even more. however, if it was constant 2.8, i'd expect that thing to come with its own wheelbarrow...its gonna weigh a TON, which will defeat the walkabout purpose.

Pfft? 2.8!? Why don't they REALLY shake things up and come out with a f/2 zoom

I know it can be done!

There is little reason for Canon to attempt to go with purely MF lenses. If they go there, they risk comparison with other brands such as Leica and Carl Zeiss that produce superb optics.

Then again, if they bring out a 35mm f/1.0L that was purely MF, yet affordable and has acceptable IQ from wide open, I might be interested.
